Two social media influencers from Tunisia have faced backlash from viewers of their TikToks after sharing videos of their journey to Europe via migrant boats.
The pair posted a number of photos and videos across their online platforms, showing their illegal travels.
In one video, posted on December 16 2021, Chaima Ben Mahmoude films herself on a boat packed with other people.
Music blares out of speakers and the group cheer and clap as they make their way across the Mediterranean Sea.
There is also a cartoon Italian flag which she has placed on the video.
One viewer commented “Shame on her? More like, it’s a shame for us!
“She managed to make it to Italy, while we’re all stuck in Tunisia.”
On Sabee al Saidi’s account there are multiple videos of her dancing by the Eiffel Tower at night less than a week ago.
Her Instagram bio also features a French flag emoji and the phrase “Je suis tout et son contraire” which translates to “I am everything and its opposite”.
Last year alone, United Nations officials estimated in November that 1,600 people died or went missing in the Mediterranean, the main gateway to Europe for people trying to enter the continent with the help of human smugglers.
The busiest and deadliest migrant route to Europe is the central Mediterranean, where people travel in crowded boats from Libya and Tunisia — and in some cases all the way from Turkey — towards Italy. Around 60,000 people arrived in Italy by sea last year, and around 1,200 died or disappeared on the journey, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
