A man who held Tesco staff at knifepoint as he robbed a till before abusing police officers and defiling his cell has been jailed.

Bradley Stacey, 21, from Penhill in Swindon, terrified workers at Tesco in Swindon's Abbey Meads Village Centre in December last year as he demanded they hand over cash while holding a staff member at knifepoint.

The shop's alarm was then sounded, and police were called, before Stacey was "swiftly located nearby", Wiltshire Police said.

After the 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of a bladed article, he launched into a disgusting tirade of abuse and vandalism.

Stacey began spitting the back of the police van where he was being held, and subjected officers to a "horrible barrage of abuse and threats".

When he was put in a police cell, he then urinated on protective self-harm clothing he had been provided, damaged his bed, and smeared blood on the wall.

Following the campaign of threats and vandalism, Stacey was arrested further on suspicion of criminal damage and a public order offence.

In January, the 21-year-old appeared at a court hearing in which he pleaded guilty to robbery, possession of a bladed article, two counts of criminal damage and a s4A public order offence.

Stacey was handed a seven-year prison sentence for his crimes at Swindon Crown Court yesterday.

Swindon CID's DC Sally Booth said: "There can be no justification for Stacey's actions, which understandably left the staff members present at Tesco feeling incredibly upset and shaken by what happened.

"Stacey also subjected our officers to a horrible barrage of abuse and threats after he was arrested for the robbery, as well as requiring officers to clean up after him after his actions in the police van and cell.

"Nobody, whether it's an officer or a member of the public, should have to deal with these kinds of things while going about their work.

"I'm pleased that Stacey's actions have resulted in a lengthy jail sentence for him."

Elsewhere in Swindon, another man assaulted police earlier this year while attempting to escape a vehicle transporting him to a magistrates' court.

Four security officials and police officers intervened but were assaulted, prompting significant response from Wiltshire Police who surrounded the van with 10 police cars.

The man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and attempting to escape lawful custody.
