Sword-wielding criminal Alec Cowie who terrorised women for a number of years has died behind bars in HMP Grampian.
Detectives had branded Mr Cowie 'violent and controlling' after he was found guilty of a number of assaults on women in Aberdeenshire in a period spanning 20 years.
He had been locked up after a three-hour long siege where he threatened police officers with a sword following a row with a neighbour over a football.
Officials at HMP Grampian confirmed that 51-year-old Cowie died last week while on recall to custody whilst awaiting a further trial on fresh allegations.
Originally jailed for six years in 2008 for a ‘siege’ where he held riot police back at his home Aberdeenshire.
Police were called after Mr Cowie tied a noose round the neck of Christopher Beedie and started to drag him around.
As police arrived, Mr Cowie had brandished a 3ft long sword, and made holes in a police shield by using a cordless drill.
He also used knives, a hammer and a crowbar, to evade capture by police officers and made hints he was in possession of a petrol bomb.
