A powerboat driver has died after crashing into a houseboat during a racing event in Suffolk.

The man, who has been named as Brett Duncan, died at the scene of the crash at the Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club near the town of Lowestoft on the evening of Thursday, July 24.


The Circuit Powerboat Association (CPA) earlier confirmed no other competitor was involved.

Police were called to the scene just after 7.10pm.

“The East of England Ambulance Service, Coastguard and a volunteer paramedic from Suffolk Accident Rescue Service were also on the scene.

"But despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the driver of the powerboat – a man aged in his 50s – sadly died at the scene,” Suffolk Police said.

The force confirmed there were no other injuries as a result of the crash.

“Police are working closely with partners and other agencies in relation to the incident", it added.

The CPA has this morning named the powerboat driver as 51-year-old Brett Duncan, adding it was "shocked and saddened" by his death.

A statement read: "Following on from a racing incident that took place at the Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club on Thursday, July 24, we are sad to confirm that circuit powerboat racer, Brett Duncan (51) has unfortunately succumbed to the injuries that he sustained in a lone racing accident.

"As an experienced and popular member of the power boating community, we are shocked and saddened by Brett’s untimely passing and our sincere thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this tragic time.

"We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to all of the event staff and the emergency services for their swift and timely response to the incident."

It went on to request the victim's family is given the "privacy they need to grieve".

The Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club near Lowestoft, Suffolk

The Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club said in an earlier statement that a "serious collision" had taken place during an event.

A statement on its website read: "At approximately 6.50pm [on] Thursday, a serious collision occurred at the Lowestoft & Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club during their event.

"A competitor has sustained serious injury. No other competitor was involved.

"We ask that while this incident is ongoing, that people refrain from speculating on the circumstances and that the privacy of family of the competitor involved, is respected.

"We will issue a further update at the appropriate time."
