Pro-Palestine protesters claimed activists would not target the Cenotaph on Armistice Day

Pro-Palestinian protesters should be jailed if they vandalise the Cenotaph on Armistice Day, Suella Braverman has claimed.

The Home Secretary blasted demonstrators ahead of the scheduled march on November 11 just hours after angry activists lobbed fireworks at Metropolitan Police officers, injuring four.

Braverman refused to say whether the protest should go ahead next weekend but issued a clear warning to pro-Palestine demonstrators.

“If anyone were to vandalise the Cenotaph, they must be put into a jail cell faster than their feet can touch the ground,” she told Sky News.

Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer also slammed protesters after volunteers selling poppies at Charing Cross Station were surrounded by flag-waving activists.

Pro-Palestine protesters have been demonstrating against events in Israel since violence escalated following Hamas' attack on October 7.

The Metropolitan Police arrested 29 people in connection with crimes ranging from terrorism offences to breaching a dispersal order that was enacted by the Scotland Yard after fireworks were hurled at officers.

There was also tension in Whitehall yesterday when pro-Palestine activists clashed with Union flag wavers near the Cenotaph.

Commentators criticised moves to remove flags from the Cenotaph for a scheduled cleaning ahead of next weekend’s Remembrance Sunday parade.

Responding to concerns about the removal of the flags on social media, the Metropolitan Police said: "We have been in touch with the Department of Culture, Media & Sport who are responsible for the flags on the Cenotaph.

"They have confirmed that every year as part of preparations for Armistice Weekend they are removed and cleaned. They will be returned shortly."

Rishi Sunak implored hundreds of thousands of activists not to travel to London next weekend as pro-Palestine protesters prepare to continue demonstrations on Armistice Day.

The Prime Minister, who will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, labelled the potential protest as both "provocative" and "disrespectful".

He said: "There is a clear and present risk that the Cenotaph and other war memorials could be desecrated, something that would be an affront to the British public and the values we stand for."

Sunak added: "The right to remember, in peace and dignity, those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for those freedoms must be protected."

However, two pro-Palestine campaign groups revealed activists have "no plans" to march towards the Cenotaph, adding: "We understand the sensitivity of the date."

Pro-Palestine protesters have targeted other monuments, including statues dedicated to former Prime Minister David Lloyd George and First World War commander Field Marshal Douglas Haig.

A Black Lives Matter protester previously attempted to set alight a flag on the Cenotaph in June 2020.
