Conservative MP Sir David Amess has died after being stabbed multiple times at a meeting with constituents.
A suspect has been arrested after the Tory veteran was stabbed several times during a “very distressing” incident at a constituency surgery in Essex.
The 69-year-old victim, who has been an MP since 1983, was fatally injured at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex midday on Friday.
Witnesses described the scene as “very distressing”.
In a statement, Essex Police force said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion murder after a man was stabbed in Leigh-on-Sea.
“We were called to an address in Eastwood Road North shortly after 12.05pm today (Friday 15 October).
“We attended and found a man injured.
“He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene.
“A 25 year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered.
“He is currently in custody.
“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”
The Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon reacted to Sir David Amess MP's death: "Elected representatives from across the political spectrum will be united in sadness and shock today. In a democracy, politicians must be accessible and open to scrutiny, but no-one deserves to have their life taken while working for and representing their constituents."
The Health Secretary Sajid Javid said he was “devastated”.
He added: “great man, a great friend, and a great MP killed while fulfilling his democratic role”.
"My heart goes out to Julia, his family, and all who loved him. Let us remember him and what he did with his life,” said the Health Secretary.
David Davis MP spoke on GB News to presenter Liam Halligan, he said: "I don’t think he saw politics as a career, I think he saw it as a vocation. Something he just did because he loved to serve people".
David Davis MP said: "First thing to say is that my thoughts are with his family and his staff, and his friends".
"I suspect that this must have been a shocking occurrence for those who were with him when this happened".
"Obviously you can't think of a worse thing to happen to a family".
"It's such a terrible, tragic paradox, because he was killed doing in some ways the most important thing for an MP, and that is contact with our own constituents" said David Davis MP.
Carrie Johnson, the Prime Minister’s wife, tweeted: “Absolutely devastating news about Sir David Amess.
“He was hugely kind and good. An enormous animal lover and a true gent. This is so completely unjust. Thoughts are with his wife and their children.”
The former prime minister Theresa May has paid tribute to Sir David Amess: "Heartbreaking to hear of the death of Sir David Amess. A decent man and respected Parliamentarian, killed in his own community while carrying out his public duties. A tragic day for our democracy. My thoughts and prayers are with David’s family".
