An urgent search for a 15-year-old boy is underway after he got into difficulty in a Scottish river.

The teenager was reported missing after entering the River North Esk near Gannochy Bridge in Edzell, Angus on Saturday around 5pm.


Police Scotland, the fire service and coastguard teams have been involved in the search since the weekend.

Emergency services remain at the scene as the search continues on Monday.

Police say the teenager's family have been made aware and are being updated with developments.

Photos from the weekend showed a specialist helicopter in the area while rescue teams were spotted on the ground searching near the river.

An area known as the Blue Door Walk, near the Rocks of Solitude, is popular with swimmers, particularly in the summer months.

The river runs from Edzell down to the North Water Bridge, then continues on into Montrose Basin and to the North Sea.

A force spokesperson said: "Police were made aware of a 15-year-old boy in difficulty in the water in the River North Esk near Gannochy Bridge, Edzell, around 5.10pm on Saturday.

"Emergency services remain in attendance and searches are ongoing.

"The boy's next of kin are aware."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “We were alerted at 5.03pm on Saturday, July 15 to reports of a person in difficulty near to the Blue Door River Walk, Edzell.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and specialist resources to the area.

“Firefighters assisted emergency service partners.

"Crews left the scene at around 10.51pm."
