Police said they would review the footage

An investigation has been launched after trespassers broke into an ex-RAF base that is set to house migrants.

Footage posted on social media shows a number of people using torches to walk around RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.

Some of those in the footage were heard making anti-migrant remarks.

Police said they would review the footage that allegedly showed the intended living quarters for migrants.

The group posted on Facebook: "We weren't expecting the support we received, or the help in distracting the security. Keep up with the protests. We will be back."

An investigation has now been launched by Lincolnshire Police.

A spokesperson from the force told BBC News: "We are aware of a Facebook post which shows people seemingly on the base at the former RAF Scampton site.

"We will fully review this and determine if there are any offences, and if so, we will look to take appropriate actions against those responsible."

Commenting on the latest incident, Liberal Democrats councillor Mr Young told BBC News: "It's disappointing that despite continued reassurance from the Home Office that they would protect the heritage of the site, there appears to have been another breach.

"We will be looking to speak to the Home Office as a matter of urgency to look into this matter."

A Home Office spokesperson said the incident had been reported to police.

It comes as West Lindsey District Council had challenged the Home Office over the use of land at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, saying it should be stopped.

The base was used by the Dambusters during World War Two.

53 airmen were killed in the famous mission, which targeted three German dams on 16 and 17 May 1943.

The site could house up to 2,000 male asylum seekers and has been a hotspot for protests.

The Home Office is expected to apply for a Special Development Order to use RAF Scampton as asylum centres for three years until 2027.
