A spokesperson for the Wessexes' announced how the couple were forced to make alternative travel arrangements, after their plane bound for Gibraltar experienced technical difficulties.
The official press release outlined how the Wessexes' trip to Gibraltar had been "delayed slightly" after their flight was "diverted safely back to the UK due to a technical issue".
The spokesperson confirmed that Edward and Sophie would arrive in Gibraltar later today and their official programme will be adjusted accordingly.

The Spanish government has been vocal in its opposition to the Wessexes' visit to Gibraltar, with Madrid continuing to claim the territory is part of Spain.
The border arrangements between the two countries are currently the subject of talks between Britain and the European Union.
Officials in Spain believe the royal visit "is not appropriate" given the Brexit tensions between London and Madrid.
Edward and Sophie were present across the bank holiday celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
They were pictured attending a street party in Belfast, mingling with members of the public at the 1950s themed celebrations.
A spokesman for British Airways released a statement this afternoon, following the technical issues.
He said: "Our pilots decided to return to Heathrow as a precaution due to a minor technical issue, and the aircraft landed normally.
"The issue has now been fixed and the aircraft is due to depart again shortly. We'd like to thank customers for their patience and understanding."
