The new system integrates smartphone technology

Royal Mail is deploying postboxes equipped with solar panels and barcode scanning technology throughout Britain to allow customers to dispatch parcels on a smartphone.

The innovative postal container incorporate drawers capable of accommodating packages exceeding the dimensions of conventional letter slots.

Users activate the drawer mechanism by scanning a barcode through the Royal Mail application, while solar panels supply electricity to operate the scanning equipment and drawer system.

The modernised postboxes retain its traditional use for standard mail alongside the new parcel functionality.

The application provides digital proof of posting and enables customers to monitor their parcels throughout delivery.

This technological solution targets individuals dispatching goods or processing returns from e-commerce purchases.

It requires users to affix Royal Mail labels to their packages, which can be produced at home through printing or acquired from Post Office locations.

Once labelled, any parcel that fits within the drawer dimensions can be deposited directly into these upgraded postboxes.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The system represents a departure from traditional postal methods, integrating smartphone technology with the physical postal infrastructure to streamline the parcel sending process for modern consumers.

Jack Clarkson, Royal Mail's managing director for out-of-home and commercial excellence, highlighted the growing demand for parcel services: "We are all sending and returning more parcels than ever before.

"This trend will only continue as online shopping shows no signs of slowing, particularly with the boom of second-hand marketplaces."

He highlighted the extensive reach of Britain's postal infrastructure: "There are 115,000 postboxes in the UK located within half a mile of 98 per cent of addresses, making them by far the most convenient network of parcel drop-off points in the UK.

"Our message is clear, if you have a Royal Mail label on your parcel, and it fits, put it in a postbox and we'll do the rest."

The postal service has expanded its infrastructure to include over 23,500 parcel points nationwide, encompassing lockers, Collect+ shops, Post Office branches, customer service locations and current parcel postboxes.

However, the new modernised approach has left craft enthusiasts - who traditionally adorned postboxes with knitted decorations - disappointed to find that the solar panels prevent such embellishments.

Melanie Delaney, a 51-year-old science teacher and member of the Secret Society of Hertford Knitters, expressed her upset over not being unable to decorate her local solar-powered postbox in Hertford.
