Obaidullah Omari and Shafakit Hussain deny raping two girls in the 2000s

Two men have been accused of treating two “highly vulnerable” young girls as “objects to be used”, having allegedly sexually groomed them when they were in care homes in Rotherham.

A jury at Sheffield Crown Court heard that the two alleged victims in this case were “attractive to those who wanted to exploit young, vulnerable girls."

The prosecution claimed that the victims were thought of as “the sort of girls who might not complain”.

Obaidullah Omari, 46, of Washington Road, Sheffield and Shafakit Hussain, 46, of Highlow View, Rotherham, appeared for the first day of a trial expected to last two weeks.

Omari, known as ‘Naj’ at the time of the alleged offences, was accused of raping both complainants, having “befriended them separately,” while Hussain was said to have raped one of the defendants after “befriending her.”

Omari, appearing in court in a purple T-shirt and wearing a religious skullcap, was alleged to have bought one of the girls cigarettes, alcohol and cannabis, having first offered to drive her around in his car when she was 13 and he was in his mid-20s.

The jury heard that the girl was later made to have sex with Omari on a mattress on the floor of his home and in his car up to four times a day.

When this allegedly happened, prosecutor Matthew Bean said “others would be present in the house,” including “other men that she didn’t know.”

Omari was accused of making it clear to those other men that “she belonged to him.”

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The “highly vulnerable” girl was subjected to “sexual grooming,” the jury heard, which ended when she was moved out of Rotherham aged 14, according to the prosecution.

Omari has been charged with four counts of rape and two of indecent assault.

One of Omari’s rape charges related to a girl under the age of 13, the second complainant in this trial, who the prosecution said was “being subjected to regular acts of sexual abuse, by a number of men” when both defendants met and sexually abused her.

The jury heard that she also knew Omari by his nickname “Naj” and that he mixed with some of the other men who were allegedly abusing her.

Mr Bean said that the girl regularly drank alcohol and that she took drugs, including heroin, as part of the “sexually groomed” process by the older men.

The prosecutor claimed she had been 12 years old when she had sex with Omari.

But Mr Bean said that Omari must have been “well aware” that she was an extremely vulnerable young girl.

Hussain was charged with three counts of rape. He was alleged to have targeted the same complainant when she was 13, including at a golf course and an Asda car park.

During one of these incidents, he allegedly gave the girl cocaine, described by Mr Bean as “grooming behaviour”.

Hussain, dressed in all black in the dock, was said to have dismissed the allegations as a “pack of lies” during police interviews.

The prosecutor told the jury that “there was no true consent” in any of the alleged instances.

Hussain, dressed in all black in the dock, was said to have dismissed the allegations as a “pack of lies” during police interviews.

Omari was said to have told the police that he had no recollection of the two girls and that he rejected all of the allegations.

Both men were charged following an investigation by the National Crime Agency.

They deny the charges. The trial continues.
