Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia's new deadly missile - which is capable of carrying ten nuclear weapons - will be deployed for combat in the "near future".

Speaking to military graduates in the Grand Kremlin Palace, the Russian president threatened the West with his new 208-ton nuclear Satan II missile.

The huge missile, which is known as Sarmat to Russians, has experienced humiliating development delays.

But now, Putin said launch pads for the 15,880mph rocket will be put on "combat duty".

The missiles, which are the size of a 14-storey tower block, can hold ten or more nuclear warheads - enough to decimate territories the size of England or France in a just one strike.

Putin also claimed that his "special military operation" to invade Ukraine has given Russians "priceless experience".

He said: "The most important goal here is development of the nuclear triad which is the key guarantee of Russia's military safety and global stability.

"Almost half our Strategic Missile Force units are equipped with the newest Yars complexes.

"Troops are being re-equipped with modern missile systems with the Avangard hypersonic warhead.

"In the nearest future the first launch pads of Sarmat [Satan-2] with a new heavy missile will be put on combat duty.

"The arsenals of the aviation and naval components of the strategic nuclear forces are being replenished.

"In January 2023, the frigate Admiral Gorshkov entered combat duty….equipped with the latest Zircon hypersonic missiles."

The missiles previously missed the deployment deadline of the end of 2022, while some reports suggest a failed test launch in February.

Putin said in June 2022 he would place the first batch of missiles on combat duty by the end of the year.

More than a year ago the former head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin said almost 50 Satan-2 missiles in mass production would soon be on combat duty.
