Guy Richardson has put his Union Jack back up after taking it down to protest the Labour Government

Pub landlord Guy Richardson has vowed his Union Jack will fly "for good" after previously telling GB News he had removed it in protest.

Thanks to a wave of support from GB News viewers, the owner of The Bright Star in Luton, Bedfordshire, decided to put up a St George’s Cross, but it wasn’t long before he received an anonymous message branding it "a disgrace".

Mr Richardson explained that he took the flag down as it had "become tatty," but quickly replaced it with a huge Union Jack.

He shared his decision on Facebook and was stunned when the post racked up more than a million views and tens of thousands of reactions.

He said: “We put it on our Facebook site just to say, 'that’s what we’re doing', and it’s gone pretty mad.

"It’s had over a million views now, 27-30,000 comments and reactions.

"Only two of them were ever so slightly derogatory but the rest were so, so supportive. It’s great, absolutely great.”

Speaking about the reaction to his previous GB News interview, Mr Richardson said: “The phone did not stop ringing.

"We had calls from New Zealand, Australia, one from Canada, and lots from Scotland. One guy rang me up when it was first aired, and we had a long conversation for about half an hour.

"He said, ‘I’m sorry, but up in Scotland we’re all behind you.’ It was great.

"I’ve had lots and lots of really positive feedback. It’s heartening and one of the reasons I wanted to put the flags back up.”

In February, the publican revealed to The People's Channel that he removed his flag because he is "not proud" to be British with the current Labour Government.

But now he will fly the flag "for good" after his display received backing from GB News viewers.

His comments come as campaigners across the nation have been embroiled in a row over displaying St George’s and Union Jack flags, while others have been spotted tearing them down.

He added: “I think it should be up to every individual to make their own decision and to make the right choice without it being decided for them.

"I don’t think it’s anyone’s right to tell you what you can and cannot fly outside your pub.

"Bearing in mind, it’s only the Union flag and the St George’s flag that we can fly without planning permission.

"Will I ever take it down? No. It’s up there for good now, absolutely. As long as I’m here, that flag will fly. And wherever I move on to, flags will fly again.”
