William reportedly threatened to withdraw from the event if Andrew, who is said to want to return to the royal limelight, took part.
Speaking about William in the Daily Mail, royal expert Rebecca English said: “I have discovered that, far from being a passenger on his royal journey, he has his own distinct vision to 'reshape' the monarchy and won't be afraid to get his hands dirty — or speak his mind on the issues that matter.
“Like his father, he also believes that a slimmed-down Royal Family is the best way to ensure its survival — and that his shamed uncle, Prince Andrew, should never have a part to play in it again."
While a friend also told the paper: “He [William] feels very strongly about this and if it had been up to him he would have pushed for things to have happened a lot faster than they did.
“He has strong views on the Duke of York and believes his insistence in trying to cling on to a public role is highly dangerous for the institution.”
The Duke of York was absent for recent Jubilee celebrations as he returned a positive Covid test in the run-up to the event.
The 62-year-old was stripped of his official duties at the start of the year as he prepared to pay a multi-million-pound settlement to Jeffrey Epstein's victim Virginia Giuffre to keep her allegations of sexual abuse, which he denies, out of court.
