A further 16 have been arrested at a demonstration in Manchester under the Terrorism Act

As many as 46 people have been arrested at a mass protest in London after Palestine Action was condemned as a terrorist group.

Activists descended on Parliament Square to rail against the group's proscription for the second week in a row - despite the Metropolitan Police explicitly warning them that supporting the group was a criminal offence.

Scotland Yard initially said 46 people had been arrested at the rally - after 29 were handcuffed at last week's event - before confirming the number was 42.

The offences mainly related to Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000, one Met Police officer said.

Membership of and support for Palestine Action is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years behind bars after it was proscribed on July 4.

But today, two groups of protesters had assembled to back the group at the square's Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela statues for the demonstration at around 1pm.

The individuals were seen holding placards bearing the words "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action" before being surrounded by police.

Some activists could be seen lying on top of each other on the floor as police searched their bags and took their ID cards and signs.

The Met was later seen carting off a number of protesters who were lying down, lifting them off the ground and into waiting police vans parked around Parliament Square.

Activists coordinated by campaign group Defend Our Juries (DOJ) have been protesting in London, Manchester and Cardiff today.

An independently-organised protest was also staged in Londonderry.

DOJ said the protesters had been arrested "for holding cardboard signs" and that further arrests had been made at the Manchester demonstration.

GMP said 16 people were arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 in Manchester in a demonstration which "peacefully dissipated at around 3.25pm".

Last weekend, officers in London were forced to endure activists shouting: "Met Police, you are puppets of the Zionist state" and "leave them alone" while arresting protesters.

One exclaimed: "British police off our streets," with chants of "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," being heard.

One woman was seen lying on the floor in handcuffs before being taken away.

The move to ban the organisation came after two Voyager aircraft were damaged at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on June 20, an incident claimed by Palestine Action, which police said caused as much as £7million worth of damage.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper went on to announce plans to proscribe Palestine Action, labelling the vandalism of the planes "disgraceful" and blasting the group for its "long history of unacceptable criminal damage".
