Donald Trump is the first former US President to face criminal charges

Nigel Farage has hit out at a US court following the news that Donald Trump will face criminal charges.

The frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury yesterday after a probe into hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Daniels claims she had an adulterous affair with the ex-president in 2006 and was paid $130,000 to keep quiet.

Trump will appear before a New York judge next week to be formally charged.

However, GB News presenter Nigel Farage has attacked the decision to arrest Trump as he took to social media.

He said: “Donald Trump will gain more support from this appalling abuse of power.”

The specific charges are not yet known, as the indictment remains under seal.

But Trump was being investigated over a payment his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, made to Daniels before the 2016 election.

The former President has said he is "completely innocent" and indicated he would not drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

Farage has backed Trump as he insists that the indictment will “will only help him get re-elected in 2024”.

He added: “The indictment of Donald Trump is yet another attempt, we’ve had the Russian hoax, the Mueller inquiry, two failed impeachments and now he’s going to have to appear in court in New York early next week.

“Even if this $130,000 should have been declared as a campaign contribution, it’s $130,000 out of about $1.6 billion spend between the two sides over that general election in 2016.

“It is at worst a very minor infringement, it’s a misdemeanour, it’s not a felony.

“And not only is this dangerous in the ways in which is divides America, but to any fair-minded person they can see with the Biden family raking in millions from corrupt regimes all over the world.

“And yet Donald Trump, over something as minor as this has been indicted. This will only help him get re-elected in 2024, which I increasingly believe that he will.”

Trump has now appealed to supporters to help fund his legal defence.

There are concerns violent demonstrations could break out in the aftermath of criminal charges with authorities having already bolstered security around the Manhattan courthouse.

The Manhattan investigation is just one of several legal challenges concerning Trump, which includes a separate criminal probe into whether he unlawfully tried to overturn his 2020 election defeat in Georgia.
