A murder investigation has been launched after a pregnant woman was found dead in Co Down, police have said.

Sarah Montgomery, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene.


A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said they received a report at about 2.15pm on Saturday of an unconscious woman with a serious injury inside a house in the Elmfield Walk area of Donaghadee.

The service has launched an investigation, urging members of the public to cooperate with the force.

Police cordons and officers remain in place today.

The force has recognised the rise in violence against women and girls across Britain and Northern Ireland as a key area for the police to crack down on.

The mother-of-two's family have been made aware of the sad news and is being supported by specially trained officers, according to the Detective Chief Inspector.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips said: "Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, who provided medical treatment at the scene."

"Inquiries are at an early stage into this deeply tragic case."

She appealed to anyone who believes they may have information which could assist the police to contact 101.
