The gesture could also land drivers with a discretionary disqualification and three penalty points on their licence

Motorists could be landed with a £1,000 for making a commonly used gesture while driving.

Drivers across the country traditionally thank others on the road by giving them a wave or a thumbs up.

According to a survey by National Tyres and Autocare found that 29.1 percent of motorists wave to say thank you on the roads.

But drivers in the UK who use hand gestures to show their gratitude could find themselves in trouble.

The Highway Code urges drivers to keep both hands on the wheel “where possible”.

Failure to do so could land drivers with a £1,000 fine, a discretionary disqualification and three penalty points on their license.

The Highway Code states: "Drive or ride with both hands on the wheel or handlebars where possible.

“This will help you to remain in full control of the vehicle at all times. You may use driver assistance systems while you are driving.

“Make sure you use any system according to the manufacturer’s instructions."

While drivers could also be handed a £1,000 fine if they flash their headlights to say thank you to others.

The Highway Code says: "Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there.

“Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.
