Flights bringing migrants to the UK under the deal are expected to begin on Saturday

The first Channel migrant was set to be deported today under Sir Keir Starmer's 'one-in, one-out' deal, however it was cancelled at the last minute.

On Monday, one migrant was due to be put on an Air France passenger flight from Heathrow to Paris.

However, protests from charities and threats of legal action caused the flight to be cancelled, according to The Telegraph.

It is believed the Home Office will try to place him on another flight on Tuesday and then he will be housed by French authorities in a hotel in Roissy-en-France, a commune in the northeastern suburbs of Paris.

So far this year, a record 31,026 migrants have arrived on small boats.

The Prime Minister's announced the 'one-in, one-out' migrant return deal alongside Emmanuel Macron at the beginning of July in an effort to stem the flow of migrants crossing the channel.

However, British and French charities have protested against the deal, and have mounted campaigns to stop it.

Air France is said to be receiving large numbers of calls, emails and social media messages telling them "not to agree to collaborate with the interior ministry and not to agree to deport these people on these flights".

A spokesman for Auberge des Migrants, a charity which supports migrants in northern France, said: "There were a lot of people who responded to this campaign and agreed to send emails asking for this collaboration with the Government to be stopped."

Rather than chartering a single flight carrying a large number of migrants, the Home Office is understood to have opted for smaller numbers of migrants on daily commercial flights.

It is believed the French authorities have been told to expect at most 10 people per flight, however they would have preferred larger numbers on fewer flights.

As part of the agreement with France, asylum seekers from France will be flown to the UK.

The first of these flights is expected to take place on Saturday, according to The Telegraph.

It is believed both Sir Keir and Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, wish to increase the numbers of migrants deported through the scheme, which was originally supposed to work on a small scale, in order to deter illegal crossings of the Channel.

However, the deal is only due to last for a year, and there is a break clause which can be activated by either side.

While highlighting "the still very experimental nature of this agreement", a French Interior Ministry source told French media: "We will be able to terminate the agreement if we do not see any benefit of it."
