Newly appointed Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the first migrant returns to France will take place 'imminently'

Britain's migrant crisis has sparked a fiery GB News row as Senior Political Commentator Nigel Nelson argued it would be "too difficult" to detain illegal migrants.

Debating the latest efforts by Labour on the People's Channel, broadcaster Lizzie Cundy hit back at Nigel and declared the Government is "full of empty promises".

The Government is expected to unveil plans to move asylum seekers from hotels into military barracks. It understood the new Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce the policy within weeks.

It follows a wave of small boat crossings on Ms Mahmood's first day in office, with more than 1,000 illegal migrants entering Britain.

Discussing the fears felt by Britons across the nation, Ms Cundy told GB News: "I totally disagree with you, Nigel. I live in an area where there is a migrant hotel, it's next to a school and I'm seeing what's happening. It's very similar to what's happening in Epping.

"And the parents, the grandparents, the community is worried and scared. We've seen what's happened in Epping, it's unbelievable, and I know one of the mothers there and they are truly worried and scared."

Hitting out at Labour, she added: "I don't feel this Government is listening. The new Home Secretary got another thousand over, we need to do something. This is not a problem, it's a crisis.

"We don't know where they're from, we don't know their backgrounds, we don't know if they have a criminal record."

Delivering his verdict on migrant hotels, Nigel supported Labour's fresh proposals to house illegal migrants in former army barracks.

He explained: "There's nothing wrong with having different places for them. John Healey's idea this morning, the Defence Secretary, to put them in army barracks, fine.

"If we can find if we can find places like that, no problem."

Ms Cundy then interjected, arguing: "How is this Government so full of empty promises? They said they'll smash the gangs, what gangs has he smashed?"

Nigel responded: "On smash the gangs, it's not going to happen overnight, we're not going to stop the boat crisis overnight. But what they have done is they've reduced the numbers of people coming across.

"In other words, although the figures are high, it would have been even more. The National Crime Agency has run operations in Bulgaria, which has seized 45 inflatables, they're eight feet long, they could carry 60 people each. The fact that they've got those means that more than 2,000 people weren't able to cross."

Cundy hit back again, stating: "He's not smashing the gangs, he can't even smash the top of his boiled egg. He's not going to stop it, Nigel.

"In Weybridge, which is a beautiful place, they're putting them in HMOs and they are filming the schools. Rupert Lowe has actually written a letter to the Home Secretary about it, it's a big worry and we need to act and act now."

In a statement, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: "These small boats crossings are utterly unacceptable and the vile people smugglers behind them are wreaking havoc on our borders.

"Thanks to our deal with France, people crossing in small boats can now be detained and removed to France and I expect the first returns to take place imminently.

"Protecting the UK border is my priority as Home Secretary and I will explore all options to restore order to our immigration system."
