Eritrean rapist Dan Tesfalul left his victim 'scared of being out alone in case it might happen again', a court was told

A migrant who arrived in Britain by small boat has been jailed for more than eight years for raping a woman outside a Norwich club.

Dan Tesfalul, 27, attacked the woman in a car park after she left Qube nightclub in May 2024.

The 27-year-old had been staying at a migrant hotel in Norwich at the time of the assault.

A witness heard the woman "screaming out" during the attack.

The ordeal only ended when a security guard challenged Tesfalul and forced him to flee the scene.

Tesfalul was initially charged with raping the woman three times - but the other two charges were left on file after he pleaded guilty to one count.

Norwich Crown Court heard that Tesfalul had spotted the victim while out drinking in Norwich city centre.

After buying her drinks, he followed her when she left the club to buy food.

Tesfalul had left Eritrea seven years ago and arrived in the UK in 2022.

The asylum seeker had been studying for a psychology degree in his home country - and was granted leave to remain in the UK in November 2023.

But just six months after being awarded permission to stay in the country, he committed his vile crime.

In a victim impact statement, the woman described it as "a horrible attack when I was at my most vulnerable."

She said she is now "scared of being out alone in case it might happen again."

The victim added: "I feel scared of men and feel they are out to get me and rape me too."

She now "hates people touching me", keeps herself "hidden away" and just wants to "curl up into a ball."

Judge Alice Robinson sentenced Tesfalul to an extended sentence of 13 years and five months - eight years, three months in custody and five years on licence.

She also imposed a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim for 15 years.

The judge said Tesfalul had "specifically targeted" the victim who was vulnerable and unable to defend herself.

She branded him an "extremely dangerous" offender who had demonstrated a "predatory sexual manner".

Detective constable Dave Block said: "I hope this conviction and sentence serves to re-enforce the message that in Norfolk, dedicated detectives investigate reports of sexual offences thoroughly and that courts take these matters seriously."

He commended the members of the public who intervened in the incident and the police officers who responded.

DC Block particularly praised the victim who engaged with police throughout the investigation.
