Residents have described the horror blast as 'absolute carnage'

One person has been airlifted to hospital after a house was "ripped apart" in a suspected gas explosion in Middlesbrough.

It is understood that a property on Kirkland Walk near Frampton Green exploded on Tuesday.


Residents have described the blast as "absolute carnage" and as though "a plane was crashing".

Pictures from the scene have been shared online and show a semi-detached property completely destroyed.

A North East Air Ambulance spokesperson said: "Our critical care team was activated at 12.46pm to an incident in Middlesbrough.

"We had two doctors and two paramedics respond to the scene and they worked alongside the North East Ambulance to assess and treat a patient. The patient is being airlifted to hospital."

Witnesses report that a Northern Gas Networks van, an ambulance, and four police cars are present at the scene.

A police cordon has been erected to block access to the scene.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Cleveland Fire Brigade have warned the public to stay away from the area.

A spokesperson said: "We are currently (18/06/2024 @12:42) dealing with an incident on Kirkland Walk in Middlesbrough. Please avoid the area if you can."

Roofer, Kayfee Hameed said he rescued the homeowner from the fire.

"Everybody was on the grass over there watching. When I drove past I saw the fire at the house. I jumped out and everyone was shouting 'don't go, don't go'," he told Teesside Live.

"I ran inside and I said is 'anybody there?' The man was laid down there were all rocks on his leg. He was just shocked.

"I told him to come closer because the fire was coming down. I put him on my back and got him out.

"I put him on the grass. All his skin came off like a carrier bag."
