Shopkeeper in the northern German town of Flensburg displayed a notice declaring 'Jews not allowed' on his store door

Martin Daubney was left speechless on GB News today, as he discussed how a German shop owner banned Jewish customers from his store.

The host declared the incident left him "chilled to my absolute core", drawing parallels to Germany's darkest historical period.

His comments are in response to a shopkeeper in the northern German town of Flensburg who displayed a notice declaring "Jews not allowed" on his store door, with additional text stating: "Nothing personal, nothing anti-Semitic. I just can't stand you."

Authorities removed the sign from the entrance after determining the message could potentially disrupt public order and promote animosity towards Germany's Jewish population.

Stephen Silverman, representing the Campaign Against Antisemitism, appeared on GB News to analyse the incident's broader implications.

He characterised the shop sign as an exhibition of "explicit" and "smug and self-satisfied racial hatred", noting the particularly disturbing casualness of its expression.

Mr Silverman replied: "I think it's a very simple answer, Martin. It’s an expression of explicit and it has to be said, smug and self-satisfied racial hatred.

"That is shocking, and it’s made all the more shocking by the almost casual way in which it is expressed. But no one should be surprised.

"We have been on this trajectory for two years. You and your viewers will know the old expression: give them an inch and they'll take a yard.

"Islamist and radical left extremists have been given miles over the last couple of years, far more leeway than other flavours of extremism.

"And it has created a permissive climate in which people believe this is possible, because they’ve learned that usually there are no consequences."

Martin recalled his education about the Third Reich and Kristallnacht, describing the systematic persecution Jewish communities faced in Weimar Germany before the Holocaust.

He referenced how the Nazi regime coordinated boycotts of Jewish businesses and displayed anti-Jewish propaganda, calling these events "a disgraceful and despicable part of human history".

Local reports indicate the notice remains displayed on an interior wall of the establishment.

The 60-year-old proprietor, Hans Velten-Reisch, faces investigation after Flensburg police received multiple complaints. Law enforcement confirmed that at least four formal reports were filed against him.

A police representative told Stern magazine that prosecutors are examining the complaints for potential criminal violations.

The store owner attempted to justify his discriminatory notice by linking it to the conflict in Gaza.

In comments to Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitungsverlag, Velten-Reisch claimed he wasn't promoting hatred but merely expressing his views.

He argued that since Jewish people reside in Israel, he couldn't distinguish between those supporting or opposing military actions.

The shopkeeper accused others of hypocrisy, suggesting they preach against repeating history whilst engaging in similar behaviour themselves.
