Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have been granted an additional £108,000 for the coming financial year, as the total cost of the search reaches more than £13million.

The Home Office has approved the funding for Operation Grange, the Metropolitan Police unit tasked with hunting for Madeleine, who vanished in May 2007.

Last year, Scotland Yard received £100,000 for the investigation, with this year's amount increasing by £8,000.

Madeleine was just three years old when she disappeared from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, 18 years ago.

The investigation has been ongoing since her disappearance, with funding provided annually.

A Home Office spokesman said: "The ongoing police investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, known as Operation Grange, is an operational matter for the Metropolitan Police Service.

"Ministers have approved a request to provide up to £108,000 for Operation Grange in 2025-26.

"In line with our Special Grant processes, funding for Operation Grange is approved on an annual basis."

Christian Brueckner remains the main suspect in Madeleine's disappearance, though he has not been charged in relation to the case.

The 48-year-old is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Sehnde Prison near Hanover for the rape of an elderly woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.

He was recently cleared of several unrelated sex charges alleged to have happened near the Algarve resort, though prosecutors have appealed this decision.

Brueckner is expected to be released in September unless charged in the Madeleine case.

Det Ch Insp Mark Cranwell, who oversees the British investigation, said: "We continue to support Madeleine's family to understand what happened on the evening of 3 May 2007 in Praia da Luz.

"Our thoughts remain with the family."
