Lucy Letby trial hears police found a note in nurse's home saying 'I killed them on purpose'

“I AM EVIL I DID THIS” – the note that police found in Lucy Letby’s home

This morning, the jury heard that, among the former nurse’s possessions, the police found a piece of paper which said things like “I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough.”

The prosecution in the Lucy Letby trial completed its opening at Manchester Crown Court this morning.

The former nurse has been charged with the murder of seven babies, as well as the attempted murders of a further 10 whilst working on the neo-natal ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Lucy Letby denies all the charges against her.

Today, the prosecution began with Child P. Alongside Child O, these two babies were allegedly murdered by Lucy Letby on consecutive days in June of 2016.

Child O and Child P were two out of a set of triplets. After they had both died, Lucy Letby spent time with their parents and, at one stage, took a photograph of the brothers together in a cot.

Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC told the jury that, after the health of Child P had begun to deteriorate, Lucy Letby made a comment to one of the doctors. The jury heard that the doctor was “surprised” by the comment, and had recalled it as “something like ‘he’s not leaving here alive, is he?’”

The prosecution went on to describe this as “an echo” of what they allege Lucy Letby said ahead of the death of Child C, when she told a colleague: “He’s going. He’s going.”

The jury then heard the details around Child Q – the final child in this case. It has been alleged that Lucy Letby attempted to murder this baby on the 25th of June in 2016, just one day after the murder of Child P.

Child Q was three days old when the prosecution suggest Letby attempted to take his life. The court heard that the former nurse had injected air and a clear fluid into Child Q’s stomach via a nasogastric tube in an attempt to murder him.

Once he was moved to a different hospital – away from what the prosecution described as “Lucy Letby’s sphere of influence” – Child Q made a rapid recovery.

The court also heard that, after her attempt to murder Child Q, “Lucy Letby was worried when she went home that night.” The prosecution suggested that she believed people were becoming “suspicious” of her. The following week, Lucy Letby worked her final day on the neo-natal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

In the prosecution’s conclusion, the court heard that, upon a police search of Lucy Letby’s home, they found a piece of paper which said things like “I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough” and “I don’t deserve to live.”

At the bottom of the note, which the jury were shown an image of, there were six words: ‘I AM EVIL. I DID THIS.’

The prosecution then concluded, and it’s expected the defence will begin their address to the jury shortly.
