The toddler had been left alone in the dark with no food and water for almost two weeks

A two-year-old boy starved to death next to his dad’s dead body after social services failed to save him, his family has claimed.

Bronson Battersby was found in his Pudsey bear pyjamas curled up next to his father Kenneth, 60, who suffered from a heart attack soon after Boxing Day.

The boy and his father were discovered in their home in Skegness, Lincolnshire, two weeks after they were last seen alive.

Bronson had been left alone in the dark with no food and water for 14 days.

A social worker went round to the property on January 2 but received no answer after knocking.

They revisited two days later but again, received no reply.

After both occasions, the social worker contacted the police.

It was not until January 9, two weeks since the pair were last seen, that their bodies discovered.

The social worker used a key from the landlord to get into the rented property where they stumbled upon the horrifying scene.

Emergency services rushed to the property but it was too late and the pair were pronounced dead.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Their pet dog Skylar survived but was extremely emaciated.

Post-mortem results show that the toddler died from dehydration and starvation, while Kenneth died of a heart attack.

Bronson’s mother, Sarah Piece, 43, claimed that social services missed multiple chances to save the two-year-old.

She last saw her child before Christmas, after having a row with her ex-partner.

The 43-year-old told The Sun: “If social services had done their job Bronson would still be alive. But they didn't do anything.

“I can't believe it. They can't let them get away with this. We have to be able to rely on social workers to keep our children safe.”

She shared the results of the post-mortem, which stated that Kenneth likely died no earlier than December 29.

The devastated mother said she was unable to hold her child when she went in to identify him.

She wept as she said: “I couldn’t pick him up because his body was too fragile.

“I could only touch him. He had been left there too long.”

Heather Sandy, executive director for children's services, said: “This was a tragic incident, and we are supporting the family at this difficult time.

“We are carrying out a review of the case alongside partner agencies to better understand the circumstances, and we await the results of the coroner's investigations as well.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved.”

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: “Police were made aware of the deaths of a 60-year-old man and a two-year-old child at a property in Skegness, at around 3.25pm on January 9.

“Investigations have been carried out and the deaths are not being treated as suspicious.”

“The matter has been passed to the coroner’s office.”
