Joe Biden is set to send a group of US politicians for crunch Brexit talks with the UK and European Union this week.
The decision comes after Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced plans to scrap parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
European Commission vice-president Maros Sefcovic is among those to have already slammed the UK’s plans, warning that Brussels could retaliate.

And as a result of the tensions, Mr Biden is deploying a “high-level group of US politicians”.
The politicians are due to visit Brussels, the UK and Ireland later this week, according to Politico.
Last week, it seemed that the US politicians were beginning to warm to the UK’s position on the Protocol, Northern Ireland minister Conor Burns said after meeting his US counterparts in Washington.
But his comments came after a White House spokesperson urged Mr Johnson to find a "pragmatic" solution to the dispute.
The spokesperson said: “The best path forward is a pragmatic one that requires courage, co-operation and leadership.
"We urge the parties to continue engaging in dialogue to resolve differences and bring negotiations to a successful conclusion."
Explaining the decision to overhaul the Protocol in the House of Commons on Tuesday, Ms Truss said the Good Friday Agreement is “under strain”, adding: “Regrettably, the Northern Ireland Executive has not been fully functioning since early February.
“This is because the Northern Ireland Protocol does not have the support necessary in one part of the community in Northern Ireland."
She added that the UK’s preference is to “reach a negotiated outcome” with the EU, while also insisting that the proposed bill is "consistent with our obligations in international law".
Ms Truss confirmed that the new bill is not "about scrapping the Protocol", adding: “Our aim is to deliver on the Protocol’s objectives."
