An iconic British building has switched on its lights for the first time since World War Two.

Hundreds of people gathered for the momentous occasion as Saltdean Lido, a Grade II* listed building first opened in 1938.

Its lights were turned off during the war in 1942 as it could have been seen as a target for bombing by the German Luftwaffe.

The site at Brighton and Hove, which reopened in 2017, was saved by the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company (SLCIC) after housing development was halted and gave a new lease of life to the previously neglected building.

Saltdean Lido is set to reopen certain sections in January 2024 including a gym, cafe and library.

A ballroom used for events will also open next year.

Derek Leaver, SLCIC chairman, said: “Over two nights we probably had over 600 people, people were very excited to see it all.

“The light was put up in 1939 and taken down in 1942.

“It was on the flight path of the German Luftwaffe.

“They were taken down and lost. This is the first time in 80 years that an illuminated sign has been put on the lido so it was quite a historic event.

“Saltdean residents and the public were delighted to see the entire building lit up. People can see now we are nearing completion.

“There is a lot of anticipation and excitement from the community.

“We had a raffle with the children so on both nights a child turned the lights on. We had a choir as well.

“The switch on signifies that we are on the last hurdle now.

“We have taken possession of the building now so are focusing on the fitting out the cafe, gym and library.

“We will be opening the building as soon as bits are ready before we have a grand opening some time next year.”
