The gigantic great white, called Mahone, measures 13 feet 7 inches and weighs 1,701 pounds

The largest male shark ever found in Canadian waters was detected off the coast of North Carolina earlier this year, after a transmitter alerted OCEARCH to its location.

The ocean research agency tagged the gigantic shark and was tracking its whereabouts when the transmitter pinged.

The great white has been named Mahone and measures 13 feet 7 inches and weighs 1,701 pounds.

OCEARCH has been following Mahone's journey off the east coast of North America, after he was tagged in October 2020 in Nova Scotia.

OCEARCH wrote on Twitter in January: "13'7" & approx 1,700lb white shark Mahone is tight to shore off Fort Fisher, NC! Be advised. We see many of our white sharks in the waters off of the Carolinas during this time of year."

A further two sharks belonging to the same species were located in waters near North Carolina last week.

The agency's tracking map detected Tancook, a 10-foot, 715-pound shark, on April 9.

On April 6 there was a ping to locate Ulysses, a 12-foot, 990-pound shark.

OCEARCH Chief Scientist Dr. Bob Hueter wrote "An expedition like this is always successful if you can get away from the dock... and do your best to fight the elements and get at least 1 animal, and we did that."

The researchers began their expedition in March to determine whether great white sharks gather in the Carolinas each year to mate.
