Ethan Ampadu was sent off for the men in red after 55 minutes, following a first-half goal from Matteo Pessina for the hosts.
Although Welsh fans and players alike will be thrilled to quality from their group, they were thoroughly outplayed by Italy, who went into cruise control after Wales went down to ten.
The last tournament Wales competed in was Euro 2016, when they made it as far as the semi-finals before defeat at the hands of Portugal.
Rob Page's side will be hopeful of a favourable draw in the next round, to give themselves the best chance of getting to the latter stages of the competition.
They'll play the runners-up in Group B - likely to be one of Russia, Finland or Denmark - in Amsterdam at 5pm on Saturday 26 June.
