Elon Musk has warned about the 'existential threat' facing the world

Tech mogul Elon Musk has warned about the 'existential threat' facing the world, as he arrives at the AI safety summit in London.

The owner of SpaceX and social media platform X, formerly Twitter, addressed the concerns around the fast-paced growth of AI, as global leaders meet in Britain's captial.

Speaking to media at the summit, Musk says he hopes the summit will bring "international consensus on the insight into advanced AI".

He added that there's "a lot of concern" among people in the AI field that the government will "sort of jump the gun" on rules before knowing what to do.

King Charles is in attendance at the summit, and is joined by many global figures including US Vice President Kamala Harris, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is also in attendance.

In his keynote address at the Summit, King Charles called AI "one of the greatest technological leaps in the history of human endeavour".

The monarch added: "The rapid rise of powerful artificial intelligence is considered by many of the greatest thinkers of our age to be no less significant."

Musk said world leaders must "establish a framework for insight" in regulating AI, calling for a "third party referee".

He described it as "an independent referee that can observe what leading AI companies are doing and at least sound the alarm if they if they have concerns".

Musk explained: "I think the public can really understand it from the standpoint of of that, that every sport has a referee. You're not going to have a football game without a referee.

"You're not going to have a, you know, rugby or cricket game without a referee. And that's it's it's in order to ensure a fair play."

Asked of the threat artificial intelligence has to humanity, Musk admitted: "I think AI is is one of the biggest threats.

"We are for the first time we have a situation where there's something that is going to be far smarter than the smartest human.

"So you know we're not stronger or faster than other creatures but we are more intelligent and here we are for the first time really in human history with something that's going to be far more intelligent than us."

The AI Safety Summit takes place today at Bletchley Park in London, where the codebreakers of the Second World War decrypted secret Nazi messages.

The first day of the summit will look at risks to national security and the threat levels of systems evading human control.

There will also be discussion on the positive side of artificial intelligence, and how it can potentially be used in education.
