Scottish football team Clyde are in the process of terminating the loan deal of disgraced player David Goodwillie, just days after he joined the club.
Goodwillie, who was found by a judge in a civil case in 2017 to have raped a woman, joined Clyde on loan from Raith Rovers on Tuesday.
The move was met with outrage from across the football world, with the 32-year-old returning to a club he played for between 2017 and 2022 before joining Raith.
And on Thursday, the Scottish League One team said in a statement that it was “in the process of terminating the loan agreement".
It also admitted that “we got it wrong” with the signing.
The U-turn comes after North Lanarkshire Council, who owns the club’s stadium, said Goodwillie would be banned from entering the ground.
A spokesman for the council warned: “Should Mr Goodwillie enter the stadium, we will consider the contract to have been breached and we will take immediate steps to terminate it.
“In addition, we have informed Clyde FC that the council intends not to renew the lease with the club when the contract for the use of Broadwood Stadium expires in May 2023.”
The entire women’s team also quit in light of Goodwillie’s signing, while the general manager and secretary of the women’s team resigned, with the players “all in agreement that we no longer wish to play for Clyde FC”.
A statement reads: “As a group of female footballers all we wish to do is play the sport that we love, but due to the current circumstances we are unable to do this.”
