Ari Vladimir launched a counter protest as demonstrators occupied university lawns on Monday to protest against Israel’s war in Gaza.

Vladimir said he was shoved by protesters after he arrived at rally outside King’s College.

Around 200 campaigners gathered as chants of "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" and "Israel is a terror state" were heard.

The first-year history student at Christ’s College said his flag was grabbed and thrown to the ground.

"I came into the protest and unfurled my flag and almost immediately I was pushed, my flag was grabbed and thrown to the ground," he told The Telegraph.

He said he was then moved away by stewards "for my own safety".

Camps have been set up on both Cambridge and Oxford university lawns with around 30 tents erected.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Students at the universities have dubbed their camps "Liberated Zones" - similar to the now-infamous camp at Columbia University which was stormed by riot police.

A list of demands from protesters were sent to both universities and included calls for them to divest assets from Israel, cut ties with Israeli academic institutions and fund Palestinian scholars.

Organisers of the Cambridge camp say they will stay "as long as it takes for our demands to be met".

Palestinian flags and other banners were hung outside of King’s College, including one which read "welcome to the people’s university for Palestine".

Jewish students at Cambridge have called for the university to take action after they say that the camp "leaves many of us on edge".

The university’s Jewish Society said: "While we respect the right to peacefully protest, we fear this may contribute further to a toxic and hostile atmosphere for Jewish students in Cambridge."

A Cambridge University spokesman said: "The University is fully committed to academic freedom and freedom of speech within the law and we acknowledge the right to protest.

"We ask everyone in our community to treat each other with understanding and empathy."
