An independent review will take place after two-year-old Bronson died alongside his father in Skegness

The death of a toddler who died in a “tragic” incident after he was alone without anyone to care for him is to be investigated in an “in-depth” independent review.

Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Partnership announced the decision after completing a rapid review into the death of Bronson Battersby and his father Kenneth Battersby, 60, in Skegness earlier this year.

The decision to commission a local child safeguarding practice review is being supported by the National Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel.

It is expected to take six months to complete, and Bronson’s family will have an input.

It will involve Lincolnshire County Council, Lincolnshire Police and health sector organisations to consider what steps could be taken to better protect children and reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.

Chris Cook, independent chair of the Lincolnshire Safeguarding Children Partnership, said: “Keeping children safe is a priority for all local agencies, and it’s important we take time to explore fully the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and identify any potential improvements we could make.

He continued: “To that end, we will be commissioning an independent author to make a detailed analysis of the work of local safeguarding partners.

“The family will also be given an opportunity to contribute to this process.

“We expect the review to take around six months to complete, and the report will be published, although we will not be able to share it until any other related investigations, such as the potential inquest, are closed.

“Our thoughts remain with the family at this difficult time.”

It’s believed two-year-old Bronson died of starvation and dehydration after his father suffered a heart attack between December 27 and the New Year.

Social services discovered the toddler and his dad’s body after attempting to complete an arranged visit to their home in Prince Alfred Avenue on two occasions between January 2 and 9 of January.

A formal inquest into their deaths is yet to be arranged.
