Police car crashes into child on bike as they chase man on drugs through streets

A child has been injured after a police car was involved in a collision while chasing a suspected stolen vehicle.

The driver behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle was also involved in a crash which included a double-decker bus and a police car.


Avon & Somerset Police confirmed a child on a bike sustained minor injuries during the incident.

An officer stopped and remained with the infant until their parents arrived.

A 20-year-old, who attempted to flee on foot in the Brislington area, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft and driving while unfit through drugs.

The specific charges included dangerous driving, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, going equipped for theft of a motor vehicle, possession of class B drugs (cannabis) and driving while unfit through drugs.

Devon & Cornwall Police informed the neighbouring force about a suspected stolen vehicle entering Bristol at around 5.45am.

Avon & Somerset Police deployed a helicopter, dog units, local officers and tactical road policing units after the driver was located.

An inspector from the force will also conduct a review into the collision.

A spokeswoman said: “A 20-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, going equipped for theft of a motor vehicle, possession of class B drugs (cannabis) and driving while unfit through drugs.

"During the pursuit, a police vehicle was involved in a collision with a child on a bike.

“The officer stopped and remained with the child who sustained minor injuries until their parents arrived.

“They are now being supported by officers from the roads policing team, and the officer involved is also receiving support.

“The collision will now be reviewed by an Inspector as is standard practice.”

The spokesperson is also urging members of the public to come forward with information.

They added: "If you were in the south Bristol area and recall seeing anything which could aid our investigation, or have any relevant footage, please contact 101 and quote reference 5224013721."
