Matt Garman will trek 3,048 miles across eight US states during his charity challenge

A cyclist is gearing up to pedal thousands of miles across the US armed with just a supermarket "bag for life" to raise vital funds for a children's charity.

Matt Garman will start his five-week long challenge on September 14, when he will jet off from his home near Brighton and travel to San Diego, California.

He will journey through eight different states before reaching their destination of Florida 3,048 miles later.

In order to complete the challenge in time for his return flight on October 27, Mr Garman will cycle for around eight hours a day, clocking more than 100 miles on some days.

And the 55-year-old will be travelling light for the journey, with all of his belongings - consisting of a few changes of clothes, his phone and wallet - tightly packed in a supermarket "bag for life".

Mr Garman, who works as a leadership speaker, told GB News: "I think if you want to grow as an individual, grow as a leader or as a person, you have got to do difficult things from time to time.

"I also have a belief that this is not a dress rehearsal - so feel, touch, taste and smell as much as you can in life."

The adventurer will be confronted with high temperatures while on his travels, which he said is the part of the challenge he is most apprehensive for, passing through Texas as well as Colorado and the Yuha Desert in California.

With every turn of the wheels, he hopes to raise as much as possible for Rockinghorse Children's Charity.

The Brighton-based charity helps support sick and disadvantaged children across Sussex, including by funding life-saving equipment.

Mr Garman told the People's Channel: "I was planning another adventure and while I was wandering around the Rockinghorse hospital and offices I was thinking 'yes this is the one, I need to raise some money for them'."

Alongside raising money for the charity, he hopes to inspire others by taking on the challenge.

Mr Garman explained: "I can't imagine what it is like being a young person growing up these days and I think sometimes there are a lack of role models.

"I'm not suggesting I'm a role model but I think it is an opportunity to show people that there are other things and we are all capable.

"We have very busy lives and we lose sight of the fact that I'm fortunately fit and healthy and I get the opportunity to do those sorts of things and I think we ought to embrace it with both hands."

In order to prepare for the challenge - which he is taking on with a close-friend - Mr Garman has been cycling three times a week for around six months.

He has also completed rounds of push-ups, sit-ups and squats every day for the past year - not even taking a break for Christmas Day.

It is however not his first endurance test, having previously rowed across the Atlantic and swam the English Channel.

"I have always set challenges for myself. I have a never ending need to demonstrate what I am capable of," he said.
