Mr Johnson also hailed the "leadership and courage" of Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Boris Johnson has warned Russia that the UK is ready to "intensify" its efforts in Ukraine and "keep going for as long as it takes” as Putin’s invasion continues.

Speaking following a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawieck in Warsaw, Mr Johnson said: “We are seeing an unfolding disaster in our European continent.

“But in this grim war, he has fatality understated the passionate desire of Ukrainian people to defend their own country and may I pay tribute to the leadership and courage shown by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, I think he has inspired and mobilised the world.

“I think Putin has also underestimated and resolve of the West and the rest of the world. We will keep up our sanctions against Russia. It’s probably one of the most powerful sanctions against anyone ever.

“We are ready to intensify and keep going for as long as it takes.

“We will continue to support our Ukrainian friends forever long as it takes.

“I am more sure than ever that Putin will and must fail, and we will succeed in protecting and serving a democratic Ukraine.”

Russian attacks have entered a sixth day, with missiles hitting a government building in Ukraine's second city, Kharkiv on Tuesday morning.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba described the latest attack as "barbaric" and urged the West to do more.

Kuleba said: "Barbaric Russian missile strikes on the central Freedom Square and residential districts of Kharkiv. Putin is unable to break Ukraine down. He commits more war crimes out of fury, murders innocent civilians."

"The world can and must do more. INCREASE PRESSURE, ISOLATE RUSSIA FULLY."
