A Jewish teenager has been shot with an air rifle and a swastika has been painted on a rabbi's home in a string of antisemitic attacks in Bournemouth.

The boy was fired upon from a passing car on his way to a synagogue in the East Cliff area of the seaside town on Saturday afternoon.

He suffered minor injuries to the forehead and was the victim of verbal abuse.

Dorset Police confirmed that detectives are leading the investigation to locate the occupants of the vehicle and to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

In a separate incident in the popular tourist destination, a swastika was graffitied on the home of a Jewish rabbi in an overnight attack reported to police on Saturday afternoon.

Rabbi Benzion Alperowitz spotted the black Nazi symbol on his home as he walked out with his children on Sunday morning.

He said: "We discovered that some cowards had visited our home and decorated it [with swastikas]."

He added: "We’re okay, thank God we’re okay. Obviously, it’s a big shock but it’s brought out our resolve – we’re going to increase our activities, promoting goodness and kindness.

"My grandparents came here after the war and they were welcomed, that was real Britain. Our country isn’t a bad place, and we should see this as a calling to intensify all areas of goodness, kindness and positivity.

"We won’t be sent into hiding. It’s no secret there’s been an increase in anti-Semitism around the country in the last two years. I don’t think this is a Bournemouth issue. We won’t buckle down, we won’t be afraid. They won’t get anywhere with their hate."

Dorset Police are treating both incidents as hate crimes.
