For those currently affected by the cuts to benefit, there is still a way to access the payment

Thousands of households could still claim the £300 Winter Fuel Payment despite not receiving Pension Credit, thanks to a little-known loophole.

The benefit was previously available to everyone aged 66, but Labour's recent cuts restricted it to those on means-tested benefits.

The changes sparked outrage from charities and the public, with concerns about vulnerable elderly people being pushed into fuel poverty. In response, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced plans yesterday to ease cuts to the Winter Fuel Allowance.

Speaking in the Commons, the PM said ministers would change the threshold to allow "more pensioners" to qualify again. However, he provided few details about who might get the benefit reinstated or when these changes might take place.

For those currently affected by the cuts, there is still a way to access the payment.

To qualify for the £300 Winter Fuel Payment, Britons must have an active claim for one of the qualifying benefits during the qualifying week, which runs from September 15 to 21.

However, there's a crucial loophole that many aren't aware of - claims can be backdated by between one and three months, depending on the benefit they're applying through. This means it's not too late to claim.

For couples where one person is over state pension age but their partner isn't, Pension Credit may not be an option. In these cases, claiming Universal Credit could make them eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment.

The backdating option provides a vital window of opportunity for those who haven't yet applied but may be eligible for support during the colder months.

Pension Credit can significantly boost one's income, providing up to £227.10 a week for single people and £346.60 a week for those with partners.

The benefit doesn't just provide direct financial support - it also opens doors to numerous other forms of assistance.

Claimants may qualify for housing benefits, cost of living payments and council tax reductions.

Those over 75 who receive Pension Credit are entitled to a free TV licence worth up to £169.50 a year.

The benefit also provides eligibility for £25 a week cold weather payments during particularly cold spells.

Additionally, recipients qualify for the £150 warm home discount, further reducing energy costs during winter months.

These combined benefits can make a substantial difference to pensioners struggling with rising living costs, particularly during the colder months when heating bills typically increase.

For those unsure about their eligibility, the Government's Pension Credit Calculator on the Gov.uk website can provide a quick assessment.

Before using the calculator, Britons will need details of their earnings, benefits, pensions, savings and investments.

If they have a partner, their details must also be included in the assessment.

Applications for Pension Credit can be made by calling the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234. A friend or family member can make the call on their behalf, but they must be present during the conversation.

When applying, Britons will need to provide personal information about themselves and their partner if applicable.

Remember that if the claim is made after reaching pension age, they can backdate their application for up to three months, potentially qualifying them for the Winter Fuel Payment.
