Going on holiday is wonderful – and could mean a lucrative side hustle, too.

Making money by going on holiday is most likely to be a side hustle income. A little extra spending money perhaps, a pot for a rainy day, or something to try a new investment strategy perhaps.

That means it is also likely to fall under the Trading Allowance rules, if you’re not already self-employed or receiving income from property. The Trading Allowance means you can earn up to £1000 a year from casual work or services without having to register as self-employed with HMRC.

If you are already self-employed or receive income from property, you will need to declare your extra holiday income to HMRC.

Make Money with Holiday Photos

This is one of the best and easiest ways to make cash on holiday! Stock photo websites like Shutterstock and Adobe Stock will pay for high quality photos. This could be of architecture or landscapes, or creative flatlays you’ve made of your hotel breakfast.

Did you know that some architecture is copyrighted? Yes, really! So, selling your photos of the lit-up Eiffel Tower might sound like a great plan, but it’s important to check the rights before you upload. You also should stick to photos without people in them, unless they are models you have a signed waiver form from.

Rent Out Your Parking Space

While your home sits empty, it could be making you money. For those with a spare space on their driveway while they’re out of town, make your house look occupied and earn some extra cash by renting out your parking space.

List the space on sites like JustPark and you could earn up to £40 a day – more if you’re in central London and have a secure drive or garage people can access.

Make Money as a Courier

With international tariffs rocketing, this could be an increasingly lucrative option if you are going on holiday to the US or other countries. How it works is you are paid to buy items that cost a lot for people to ship to their country by other routes – such as certain technology, books, or even food that they miss from home.

Websites like Grabr help you set up as a courier, where your payment is guaranteed once the task has been accepted. You are given enough money to buy the product yourself (so you know what it is and can safely declare in your luggage as packed by you) plus your fee. You then arrange to deliver at your destination, which could be in person (be careful and take personal safety into account) or arrange a secure locker drop off.

Recent examples of Grabr tasks include Airpods for a $28 reward, a Macbook Air for a $112 reward, and a Lego set with a $15 reward. You can even do a shop at home before you travel, to double up on your earning opportunities on the way out AND on your return! Make sure whatever is being requested is legal to bring into the country before you agree to purchase.

Write About Your Holiday

There are several ways to make money writing online as a travel writer. You might want to set up your own blog – they’re coming back into fashion! – or a newsletter such as through Substack or Patreon.

People can view your content for free, or you can set up tiered memberships that they pay to unlock extra blogs and other content from you. Alternatively, you could find a unique angle for your holiday and pitch it to magazine editors.

Lifestyle and travel magazines are always looking for high-quality articles with real-life experience, so do your research before you go away and send out some pitches – you might get some of your holiday paid for.

If you’re doing something really interesting and unusual, such as a six-month around-the-world trip, you could approach publications and even traditional publishers to see if they want a serialised travel column or a travel memoir to publish.

Finally, if you want to be a little more creative with your travel experiences, why not use it to inspire a fiction novel? Self-publishing isn’t frowned upon the way it used to be, and it’s a great way for talented writers to make money.

Travel romances and women’s fiction always do well – so if you have what it takes to create a novel, use your holiday for research and make money writing a book on your return.
