This extensive closure programme will see 166 Lloyds branches disappear from high streets across the UK

Lloyds Bank is set to close eight branches across the UK next week, with shutdowns scheduled between May 12 and 15.

The closures are part of a wider trend of high street banks reducing their physical presence throughout Britain.

Lloyds Banking Group, which includes Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, plans to shut at least 254 bank branches in 2025 and 2026.

They have already closed seven branches this month, with eight more to follow next week.

They have also announced combined closures of 14 Lloyds and Halifax branches planned for June.

Banking customers across the country are increasingly facing longer journeys to access in-person services.

Additionally, 107 Halifax branches will close their doors permanently.

Bank of Scotland will also lose 31 branches as part of the banking group's restructuring plans.

The closures represent a significant reduction in the banking group's physical presence nationwide.

Lloyds Bank has attributed the closures to changing customer habits and reduced footfall in physical locations.

On their website, the bank explained: "Most customers are now using our mobile banking app, internet banking or calling us instead. This means they are using branches less."

The shift towards digital banking has accelerated in recent years, with more customers preferring online services over in-person transactions.

This changing behaviour has prompted the bank to reassess its branch network across the country. However, not everyone welcomes these changes to the banking landscape.

Andrew Beverly, Campaign Director at Campaign for Cash said: "It's very disappointing that Lloyds Banking Group continue to whittle down their branch numbers, not everyone can or indeed wants to bank online, and this is doing hollowing out communities up and down the country, with the greatest impact in rural areas."

The closures have raised concerns about access to financial services, particularly for vulnerable customers. Lloyds is not alone in reducing its branch network across the UK.

NatWest is closing 53 branches in the first half of 2025, while Barclays plans to shut 99 branches by the end of the year. Santander has also announced plans to close 95 branches nationwide.

According to MoneyWeek, the closures will leave only 756 Lloyds Banking Group branches in the UK, down dramatically from over 2,200 locations a decade ago.

Customers of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland can use branches across any of the three banks for everyday banking services. These include making cash deposits, withdrawals and paying in cheques.
