Greggs plans to open up to 160 new branches this year

Greggs is reportedly set to open eight new stores within a matter of weeks, as the bakery presses ahead with plans to open up to 160 new locations by the end of the year.

The chain said it had opened 64 shops and close 37 in the first 19 weeks of 2024, resulting in a net opening of 27.

It now has a store estate of 2,500 shops, including 500 with franchise partners.

Greggs opened its 2,500th store just nine days ago, with a new store in a petrol forecourt at Sainsbury's Cobham.

In a five-year growth plan published in 2021, the brand said it hopes to grow its store estate to "significantly" more than 3,000 shops.

In 2024, Greggs plans on opening between 140 and 160 new stores.

Greggs reported a 7.4 per cent rise in like-for-like sales for the first 19 weeks of this year.

The firm said its new iced drinks range was "performing well".

It plans to roll out the offering - which includes iced coffee, flavoured lemonades and coolers - further from 300 stores to up to 700 in the coming months.

This week, Greggs said it remains on track for full-year expectations, following the first quarter trading.

The group continues to forecast a four per cent to five per cent rise in its own costs over the year.

Chief executive Roisin Currie said staff costs remained the primary driver of inflation in the business.
