The energy giant has warned of costly winter breakdowns, urging homeowners to act now or face a shock bill
British Gas has issued a stark warning to UK homeowners, cautioning that they could face an unexpected £350 bill if they fail to take action soon.
The energy supplier emphasises that autumn is the crucial period for maintaining and servicing boilers to avoid costly winter breakdowns.
A spokesperson for British Gas stated: "Even though you (hopefully) won't need your heating during the autumn months, it's wise to turn on your boiler for 10-15 minutes every few weeks.
"This helps prevent the pump and other components from seizing up due to inactivity."
The energy company advised that running the boiler briefly will also allow homeowners to spot potential issues before they escalate into larger problems when the heating season begins.
Additionally, they suggested that homeowners should bleed their radiators during autumn.
A spokesperson explained: "Autumn is a great time to bleed your radiators and remove any trapped air.
"Air bubbles can reduce the efficiency of your heating system, causing radiators to feel cold at the top and warm at the bottom."
Regular maintenance is crucial for energy efficiency. Cleaning and bleeding radiators can prevent inefficiencies, while avoiding covering them with clothes ensures proper heat circulation.
Regular boiler servicing is also recommended to identify and fix potential issues before winter arrives.
This not only ensures the boiler is in top condition but can also improve its efficiency, potentially saving money on energy bills.
To help homeowners avoid unexpected repair costs, British Gas offers a HomeCare subscription.
Starting at £10.39 per month, this service includes an annual boiler service and is more cost-effective than an emergency call-out for boiler repairs.
Mark McShane, heating expert from Boiler Cover UK suggested Britons should turn on heating on October 29, coinciding with the end of daylight saving time.
He advised maintaining a minimum thermostat setting of 10°C to protect pipes from freezing.
To keep energy costs down, homeowners can upgrade thermostats, draught-proof their homes, and wear extra layers instead of increasing heating.
McShane recommended turning down the thermostat by 1°C, potentially reducing heating bills by up to 10 per cent.
While British Gas and other experts offer valuable advice, it's important to note that the ideal time to turn on heating may vary depending on individual circumstances.
However, taking proactive steps can help homeowners avoid unexpected costs and ensure efficient heating throughout winter.
Investing in proper insulation and draught-proofing can significantly reduce heat loss, potentially lowering energy bills.
Ultimately, a combination of regular maintenance, timely servicing, and energy-saving measures can help homeowners navigate the colder months more comfortably and cost-effectively.
