Supermarkets, including Aldi, are making big moves to improve their stores despite many high street closures

Aldi has confirmed more than 20 of its stores are set to be overhauled as part of its wider restructuring plan.

Earlier today, the supermarket chain has announced a comprehensive growth strategy combining infrastructure improvements with workforce development initiatives.

The discount retailer will enhance over 20 locations before year's end while simultaneously offering more than 350 apprenticeship positions to young people considering their options following today's exam results.

Major extensions are planned for outlets in Barrow-in-Furness and Ebbw Vale, whilst 21 additional locations will receive various enhancements.

The Cumbria and Wales locations will undergo substantial expansions, while the remaining sites will receive updated fittings, reconfigured store layouts and environmental improvements.

These developments build upon an extensive modernisation effort that has already transformed over 500 British stores. Previous upgrades have introduced redesigned floor plans, expanded fresh produce sections and more spacious shopping aisles.

Jonathan Neale, the managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: "Our investment into our store estate is part of our ongoing commitment to provide the very best shopping experience for our customers.

"By extending and refreshing our existing sites, we’re providing more sustainable and convenient stores, ensuring they continue to meet the needs of the communities they serve for years to come."

Kelly Stokes, Recruitment Director at Aldi UK, said: "Not every young person will want to follow the same path after school and there are plenty of ways to build a successful career."

The positions offer practical workplace training alongside formal qualifications for school leavers exploring alternatives to traditional academic routes.

Ms Stokes highlighted the programme's practical advantages: "Our apprentices get real experience, real pay, and the chance to build a real future from day one, and we've got a whole host of opportunities available for those who are ambitious, driven and ready to learn."

She added: "We'd encourage anyone deciding on their next step this week to consider a career with us and get in touch if you're ready for the challenge."
