Aldi remain the UK's highest-paying supermarket

Aldi will become the first British supermarket to implement a £13 hourly minimum wage when the new rate takes effect on September 1.

The German discount retailer revealed that shop floor staff across the country will see their base pay increase from the current £12.75.

Workers in the capital will benefit from an even higher rate of £14.33 per hour, up from £14.05. The announcement solidifies Aldi's position as the best-paying supermarket employer in Britain.

The wage increase arrives as retailers compete to attract and retain staff in a challenging labour market.

Experienced Aldi employees are set to benefit further under the new pay structure, with long-serving store assistants earning up to £13.93 an hour nationally and up to £14.64 within the M25.

The move gives staff outside London a 25p hourly boost, while those in the capital will see a 28p rise, highlighting the supermarket’s focus on rewarding experience and loyalty.

The updated rates will take effect in September, giving thousands of Aldi workers a pay boost ahead of the busy autumn trading season.

Giles Hurley, Aldi UK and Ireland's chief executive, emphasised the crucial role employees play in the company's achievements.

He said: "Our people are the driving force behind our success across the UK."

The chief executive described the wage increase as recognition of staff members' dedication and daily contributions to the business.

Tesco plans to increase its minimum hourly pay to £12.64 from late August, whilst Sainsbury's and Argos will implement a £12.60 rate the same month.

Fellow German discounter Lidl currently pays £12.75 per hour following an increase earlier in 2025. All these rates exceed the Government's national minimum wage of £12.21 for workers aged 21 and above, which came into force in April.

The gap between Aldi's new £13 rate and competitors' wages underscores the intensifying battle amongst supermarkets to secure workforce stability through competitive compensation packages.
