It is feared people could cut their mouth or throat

Waitrose and Sainsbury's have issued an urgent product recall after a popular product was found to “contain pieces of glass”.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a national alert regarding the product and told customers not to consume the food item.

The recall is for Patak’s Aubergine Pickle, which is made by AB World Foods.

A spokesperson for FSA said: “This product may contain pieces of glass which makes it unsafe to eat.”

In a statement, the organisation said it feared that people could spit blood if they cut their mouth or throat should they fail to notice the glass shards.

They continued: “AB World Foods is recalling Patak's Aubergine Pickle because it may contain pieces of glass.

“The possible presence of glass makes this product unsafe to eat.

“The affected product has only been sold in Waitrose and Sainsbury's.”

According to the agency, the contaminated jars have the batch code 3172.

They added that they are 312g jars with a best-before date of June 2026.

The FSA added: “The company has issued a recall notice to its customers.

“These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

“Our advice to consumers - if you have bought the above product do not eat it.

“Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.
