'After months of sun, heat and SPF, autumn can bring dryness, dullness, and sensitivity'

If you live in the UK, a change in season most likely means a change in clothing. With blistering heatwaves a thing of the past, sandals and summer dresses are going under the stairs, making room for cosy jumpers and jeans.

But your wardrobe isn't the only thing that may require a revamp as we step into September. According to an expert, autumn skin care is a whole new ball game.

Founder of Fab Skin Care, Laura Porter, said: "As the seasons shift, so do your skin's needs. After months of sun, heat and SPF, autumn can bring dryness, dullness, and sensitivity."

Highlighting the importance of transitioning your skin care routine, she shared her go-to tips for "glowing, resilient skin all season long".

Switch to a gentler cleanser

"Summer routines often lean on foaming or gel cleansers to tackle sweat and oil. But in autumn, skin tends to lose moisture more easily," Ms Porter told skin care enthusiasts.

She advised opting for a cream, milk or oil-based cleanser such as Fab Skincare's No.1 or No.2 Daily Cleanser to "gently purify without stripping your natural oils".

Replenish moisture

"Lightweight gels are great for hot weather, but autumn calls for deeper hydration," the expert shared.

To achieve this, the skin care guru uses Fab Skincare's No.7 Youth Elixir Serum, which is "packed with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and squalane".

She layers this under a rich cream or balm, particularly at night, to "help strengthen the skin barrier".

Exfoliate (but gently)

The skin care guru warned that after summer, skin can be left with a rough texture or pigmentation.

"Instead of harsh scrubs, I suggest using a mild exfoliant once or twice a week," the expert advised.

Don't skip SPF

Many Britons reserve their sunscreen for beach holidays and UK heatwaves, but experts unanimously agree that this is a mistake.

"Even in autumn, UV rays are present. It's important to keep SPF in your daily routine, Ms Porter explained.

The expert recommended going for a "hydrating, antioxidant-rich" product that "protects the skin from both sun and environmental stressors".

Target seasonal concerns

Ms Porter stated: "As the air cools, dry patches, chapped lips, and pigmentation can crop up."

To mitigate the effects of this, she advised adding in "targeted skin care", meaning products that address specific concerns.

"Our Luxury Body Remedy is brilliant for nourishing dry areas. For pigmentation, consider brightening serums with vitamin C, or add a protective balm or oil layer overnight for extra comfort," the expert suggested.

Lifestyle tweaks for autumn skin

It's important to note that even the best skin care routine won't make up for poor lifestyle habits.

The expert stated: "Skin care isn't just about products – your lifestyle matters too.

"Stay hydrated (indoor heating can dry skin fast), try a humidifier if your home feels parched, and add omega-3-rich foods like salmon, walnuts, or flaxseed to help support your skin barrier from within."

While Ms Porter swears by Fab Skincare products, there are countless skin saviours available at health and beauty retailers across the country and online.
