Britons might want to invest in some grey paint before selling their home

Britons can increase their property's value by making small home improvement tweaks.

According to an expert at the YouTube channel The Paint People, certain paint colours can "boost" value.

The expert said: "One of the easiest and most efficient ways to increase the value of your home is with paint.

"A few coats of paint inside your home is pretty much a sure-fire way to put yourself in a much better and more profitable position.".

As well as looking "more up to date", a coat of paint will give your property a "new home smell".

The expert recommended picking two or three colours, striking a balance between "variety" and "visual clutter".

He urged sellers to go for grey as their "main colour". The main colour "goes through the majority of your home", in hallways, open living areas and your family room. For the bedroom, the expert advised going for a slightly darker version of the main colour - "but it's not a must".

He suggested "switching things up" with your colour choice in the kitchen and bathrooms.

For the main colour, the expert said: "I'm a big fan of warm neutrals in my day-to-day life. But for selling, I would urge you to give grey a go.

"For whatever reason, slightly warm leaning greys tend to show up quite well both in photos and in person."

The right grey can have a "contemporary feel" without looking "too cold and unapproachable". It's also "move-in ready" - your buyer won't be rushing to repaint any time soon.

As for which colours to avoid, the expert warned sellers to steer clear of beige, which can be considered "plain and boring".

He explained: "There could be just enough monotony for a potential buyer to scroll right past your home's listing."

For a secondary colour - to be used in the bathroom - the paint guru suggested opting for cooler tones. Cool colours have "soothing" and "modern" connotations.

The expert added that if you play your cards right, cool colours in your bathroom can make a potential buyer feel like they're stepping into a "luxury spa".

Finally, the expert said: "'The one room I almost always recommend painting white is the kitchen.

"This can go for the walls, but most definitely goes for the cabinets. White cabinets have a universal and timeless appeal that people love to see when they are buying a home."

However, for a kitchen island, he recommended being a little experimental, urging sellers to go for a "funky" shade. A pop of colour "adds fun to the space".
