Lipstick or lip gloss often add the finishing touches to any makeup look

Our faces change as we age, with fine lines starting to appear on the skin and even the lips.

As lips grow thinner and drier, a makeup artist has shared exclusive tips on how to use makeup to conceal this.

Dr Stephanie Taylor, who is a senior consultant at MedPak Solutions, has worked with all age ranges, from teenagers to women in their 70s.

She explained lips appear thinner with age, so it is worth avoiding certain products that highlight that change.

Dark lipsticks can be unflattering

She told GB News: "Lips become thinner and lose some of the structure and fullness with age. Dark lipstick does not make them any fuller.

"It can actually slim them down more. I recommend using satin-finish, moisture-rich lip tint instead."

Changes in the lips will usually start to become noticeable in your 40s, according to Paula's Choice.

It explained lips come thinner and flatter, fine lines start to appear, there is a loss of natural colour, and dryness and cracking could become more noticeable.

Dark colours can draw attention to this, while matte lipsticks can sink into fine lines, making them more noticeable.

This is why it is best to opt for a hydrating lip product. Contouring above your lips can help them to appear fuller, but Dr Taylor warned against common contouring mistakes.

She continued: "A contour can make your face too harsh if used excessively.

"Instead, apply some highlighter to your brow bones, your cheek bones, and above your lips. It lights up your face and highlights your features in an ever-so-slight way."

A subtle and natural makeup look will often be the most flattering for mature women, according to the expert.

She added: "My top makeup tip to you? Less is more. Choose products that love your skin back.

"When your skin is healthy and happy, you'll feel more confident and glow with an added level of gorgeousness."
