Snake plants make a wonderful addition to your indoor space

Houseplants add a sense of calm to your home, and snake plants are a popular option.

They can survive for many years if looked after correctly. An expert shared watering and placement advice.

The right placement is key and plantowners should be mindful of the temperatures, according to gardening expert from LBS Horticulture Graham Smith MCIHort.

He said: "After you have brought a snake plant home, it can be kept in its original pot unless the roots are emerging from the bottom of the pot. This suggests that it may be pot-bound.

"The ideal placement for a snake plant is somewhere bright, but out of direct sunlight. It can grow somewhere darker, but this may cause it to lose some of the variegation on the leaves.

"Snake plants thrive best when kept somewhere warm that is ideally above 10°C, and they should be kept away from draughty areas."

Watering the right amount is vital. Overwatering snake plants is one of the worst things you can do for their health, the expert explained. He added tips to revive plants if you have done this.

Graham continued: "Snake plants do not need a lot of water, and should only be watered whenever their soil feels dry.

"The water should be allowed to drain away fully, and do not allow the plant to sit in water as it can cause root rot. During winter, the plant will need even less water.

"Feed your snake plant around once a month between April and September with a liquid fertiliser, and occasionally wipe the leaves of the plant to prevent dust from building up.

"Snake plants do not need to be misted, as they are capable of coping with drought or dry air.

"If your snake plant has yellow leaves, this can be a sign that it is being overwatered, particularly in the winter.

"If the leaves are wrinkled, this can indicate that the plant is being underwatered, and it can be revived by lightly watering it over a period of a few days."

If the plants grow large and need to be repotted, Graham shared advice for this. He added: "Snake plants grow slowly and do not need to be repotted very often. If the plant has outgrown its current pot, repot it into a slightly larger pot during the spring.

"Use houseplant or cactus compost, or multipurpose compost with grit added for drainage.

"If the snake plant has grown tall, it may be beneficial to plant it into a heavy pot to prevent it from falling over."
